Engine light on and no idea why? Plug this into the OBD port under your dashboard and it tells you the fault code, what it means, and lets you clear it once the problem is sorted. No app, no phone pairing, no subscription — it powers off the car and works on its own screen.

Useful before an MOT too: the I/M Readiness check shows whether the car's emissions monitors have completed, which is what an MOT emissions test looks at. Worth five minutes before you pay for a test you might fail.

Specs at a glance

  • Reads & clears engine fault codes (DTCs)
  • Freeze frame — the sensor readings captured when the fault triggered
  • I/M readiness — emissions monitor status, useful as an MOT pre-check
  • Live data stream and real-time graphs
  • Vehicle info — VIN and calibration ID
  • Power: from the OBD port, no batteries or charging
  • Colours: Black, Red, Orange

Worth knowing

This reads the engine and emissions systems only. That is what OBD-II is — a standard every car maker must support for emissions-related faults. It will not read ABS, airbag, traction control, transmission or any manufacturer-specific module. Packaging on tools like this says "full OBD2 tests", which is true of the OBD-II standard but is not the same as full vehicle diagnostics. If you need airbag or ABS codes, this is not the tool.

Clearing a code does not repair anything. If the underlying fault is still present the light will come back, usually within a few drive cycles. Treat it as a way to find out what is wrong, not a way to make the light go away.

Check your car has an OBD-II port. It has been required on petrol cars sold in the UK and EU since 2001 and diesels since 2004. Anything older may not have one.
